PSN to be Hacked A Third Time?

Featured 108 Comments 33 Votes 3116 Views 06/05/2011 Back to News

cnet.com is reporting that a group of hackers are planning a new wave of attacks against Sony.

An observer of the IRC channel used by the hackers has reported that the attack is planned for this weekend. The cause of the attack is said to be Sony's poor handling of the PSN outage.

The hackers have claimed they currently have access to some of Sony's servers, and that they plan to publicise all information that they can gain access to.

That means your username, credit card details and addresses could be at risk. Both Sony and hacker group Anonymous have failed to comment on this breaking news.

PSN to be Hacked A Third Time? Comments

[Facepalm]

Thats so rubbing salt into the wound...
Not again ... [Facepalm]
PSN Hacked A Third Time
HACK THE GIBSON!

Man Sony is not winning any fans with this situation.
Mother*$%#@%!
"Hey, they handled our first ones really bad. Let's do it again.".
Pieces of crap. Get a life.

Edit: Must be a bunch of Microsoft hackers trying to down Sony's reputation. [Shifty]
Misleading title PSN Hacked A Third Time

Should be called "PSN to be hacked a third time" [Rage]
There is no confirmation, this is just an article on cnet. Cnet are pretty reliable though....
Surely sonys network can't be hacked that easy.
They're trying to rebuild the network while facing enormous pressure from consumers and government authorities and investigations....

Would be at all surprising if it went back down.
Couldn't they just pull the plug on the servers over the weekend? :S

They are knee deep is crap aren't they. Customers wont be forgetting this in a hurry that's for sure.
Oh, for ****'s sake.
If this becomes reality, I don't think I'd ever trust Sony again. No more PSN for me.
alright this is beyond ridiculous now!
Sony vs The World (Hackers) :'@
I don't think sony will be hasseling anymore hackers for a while.

Exactly. Same as the one yesterday.
Why do the mods not report properly instead of trying to make it sound shocking?
Anyway after the weekend the heading will prob be truth. But as it is now the title is wrong, false and makes the site look cheap and second grade.
Flame on.
(although I noticed no one flamed mirage? Yet yesterday I got flamed).
First of all the article states that the hackers already have access to the Sony servers. They are unauthorised to have access on those servers, therefore the servers have already been HACKED.

The attacks however have not been launched as yet.
*Flames Mirage*

happy?
[Facepalm] [Facepalm] [Facepalm]
So they're hacking to prove that Sony's security is still dodge? Instead of that, why don't they work with Sony to improve it? Show them the exploits they have found. Oh wait, I forgot, they're ****s. [Rage]

Anyways, it's pretty sad of them to publicize people's personal details. That's just dirty.

To clarify, I wasn't coming off as hard (as you can see by the gif/emoticon).
its easy get the Fu**ing hakers and cut both of there arms off at the shoulders then lets see them hack it without there arms, i hate hakers more than i hate cops (or Collingwood supporters)
ohh the lols

Don't be a fool. Sony were warned by very reputable underground devs that their security was hopeless months ago. This was via emails, tweets, and articles and IRC chatter that Sony must have been monitoring. They knew the situation, but chose to do nothing about it and now they're paying the price for that laziness and arrogance.
And again, heller, I have to ask if the massive Anon mask is at all relevant? Or just a touch of journalistic sensationalism?

Hellerphant said: First of all the article states that the hackers already have access to the Sony servers. They are unauthorised to have access on those servers, therefore the servers have already been HACKED.

It is rumors that these hackers already have access. I'm not saying they don't but your source is another website......
The heading should say something like 'hackers ready to launch third attack' or something like. To say Sony have been hacked a third time basing it on second hand news is second rate reporting.
Lol you gotta admit its sony's fault in a way.

They have took hackers to court keep trying to shut down the the hacking community for ps3. Now the hackers are hacking the psn to **** it up.

They are going to lose way more then what they will to pirated games.

Takes sony a month to put up the network then straight away hacked and messed up again :P

Sony learn a lesson and don't **** with hackers.

Quoting a reputable, responsible news source such as CNET is not second rate reporting. Quoting a dodgy 13 year old's Wordpress blog, now that is second rate reporting.

But back to the story at hand, all hell is going to break loose if this attack goes ahead. It not only will shatter the PSN, but could potentially kill the NGP, a hand-held that relies heavily on community via the PSN before it even sees a release.
Nice stealth change of title. Much better. :D
On topic does anyone else wish these scumbags wOuld just pee off. Leave us alone to enjoy our games.
They may have been 'sticking up for the gamers' to begin with (I don't think they ever were) but now it is overboard.
They are going to make more enemies than fans.
Someone should tell them to piss off, get a life and a real job
not news until it happens, just because they are planning it doesn't mean it will succeed.

abujaffer said: Couldn't they just pull the plug on the servers over the weekend?

Not really. They're almost ready to come up, and to have it come up for a day or two then go down again would most likely anger more people.

they arent even real hakers they stupid little school boys who think they r good, anyone can hack anything they want these days so all they prove is that America is the worst country in the world cos u watch they will get a job i the whithouse for this, Pi** off hakers go away and die.....
@Puhm - They can't take every little threat seriously, if they did, they'd be crazy. Sony would have implemented a security system to prevent things like this from happening, it isn't their fault that their was a hole in the wall for the hackers to gain access.

It's so annoying to see people say things like that, "it's Sony's fault for having shit security". No, it isn't their fault. They have security in place, it isn't their fault that drop kick losers found a way to get around it.
Yet reports have been filtering through that their software was old, outdated and they had no firewall.....

I think its very much Sony's fault.
Anyone willing to try and reason with Anonymous is more than welcome haha.
But are those reports proven to be real? Or is it just random reports backed up by un-named sources?

I find it hard to believe that their security was outdated, until I see some evidence stating that it indeed, was.

chucky110 said: Someone should tell them to piss off, get a life and a real job

I think, 'we' as gamers, should retaliate and protest against these cyber bullies/thugs. I'm sure the companies (not just Sony) would support us and trying to eradicate these potential thieves and criminals of the cyber world (into reality).

Not sure how to start it though, but I'm sure as a growing community....'we' can.
This is unbelievable! [Facepalm]

It still does not excuse the hackers. They are the bad guys. Obviously Sony could and maybe should have been better prepared but all that does not mean the hackers should not be blamed 100%. They broke the law and did all this. Sony get to clean up the mess.
Fact is if the hackers just left it alone there would be no issue.

chucky110 said: Someone should tell them to piss off, get a life and a real job

If I were Sony I would find those people in give them jobs fixing up the holes in the system, and if they refuse then decide to press charges. It would be just like how some great con men have been employed as detectives working on fraud cases catching other con men.

Hellerphant said: If this becomes reality, I don't think I'd ever trust Sony again. No more PSN for me.

That's probably the whole point. Get Sony out of the picture. I always assumed people would try to kick Sony while they're down and if this happens, that's exactly what will happen.
alright think about it. Sony are a big multi-billion dollar company...And they don't have a Firewall for a company that almost fully based on some sort of netowrking? Hmm...
I seriously cannot believe that people use this whole situation in the 'PS3 vs. 360' debate. Sony having their servers hacked has nothing to do with their consoles.

Everyone can hack this days... Sure im sure if you wanted to hack a bank or the army servers you could do it no problem.

Sony is fail here and should employee all these hackers asap or risk losing billions LOL
@Hellerphant - Ah, didn't see that. :O

@DonnieK - YES! If the scum just left the PSN alone and used their talents for good instead of ruining online play and threatening thousands of people's bank accounts, there would be no issues.

@Denor - People are immature and always strive to prove that they are better than everyone else. People that bring up "it wouldn't have happened on 360 derpmcderp" are stupid. It could happen on there, just hasn't happened yet.
@Matteh: Exactly. And if they're going to base it on internet, then the Wii is better than the 360 AND PS3, because it's both free and hasn't been hacked. :P

Biggest trolls ever. [Facepalm]

Not getting PS3 anymore. I know it's pretty silly that I won't get one just because the online service has now 'been hacked three times', but now It's one more reason why I shouldn't get one, and there's already too many for me. :S

ffs. I'm so sick of this shit reporting on the PSN outage by both @Ben and @Hellerphant. First I'd like to ask that you keep your crappy opinions to yourselves yeah? THEN. THEN. The icing on the cake is you are dribbling nonsense about never trusting Sony again for something they didn't do. Are you fudging mad? You sure sound like it.

The news article contains no opinions what-so-ever. I don't see your argument as valid in this case.

I for one believe the hackers are to blame for the attacks, however Sony should have been more upfront with the public and actually secured our sensitive information.
Hackers get a f****n life and leave sony alone. What are they getting from this. Peoples credit card number. If they find out who you are sony is going to sue the crap out of you and the only thing you'll have is your shame.

Yes, it is their fault. Unfortunately, there are bad people in the world. Sony has personal details of 100+ million accounts and millions of valid credit card details on their servers, and these "bad people" are going to want a piece of that. Therefore, it is absolutely Sony's responsibility to make sure that this data is safe.

Matteh said: But are those reports proven to be real? Or is it just random reports backed up by un-named sources?
I find it hard to believe that their security was outdated, until I see some evidence stating that it indeed, was.

Here it is then. To quote trixter:

sony...should know that running an older version of apache on a redhat server with known vulnerabilities is not wise, especially when that server freely reports its version and its the auth server

This was months before Sony realised the intrusion. Interestingly, in that same IRC log, you can see Mathieulh say that he knows people who have installed shells on Sony's servers. There is no excuse for Sony not to take action with that knowledge.
Effectively these hackers were just a Google search away from knowing all about the possible exploits. Trixter and Matheiulh told them about these vulnerabilities, and yet they turned a blind eye. That is inexcusable. I think you'll find this IRC log interesting if you can be bothered reading it: www.thehackernews.com/... (user2=trixter)
The other way Sony are at fault, whethher you agree or not, is by harrassing the shit out of Geohot, FailOverFlow and GrafCho in the most repulsive and exploitative ways imaginable. I almost laugh when I think about how incredibly moronic that was. These were guys/groups with good intentions (Geohot maybe arguable...) who knew the PS3 better than Sony's devs themselves. To piss them off, and the community they represent, is akin to a skinny dude slapping Mike Tyson in the face and calling him a faggot. They must have known what they were getting themselves in to...
Again all you just said puhm, while I don't agree/care for it I'm not going to argue it because it is pointless. It sounds like excuses to me, excuses for breaking the law and committing illegal acts.
What it does not do is justify the actions of the hackers, it does not excuse the actions of the hackers, it does nothing except make it look like they are hiding behind a heap of excuses for breaking the law. That is what they have done. Broke the law. They deserve to be punished, hopefully jail time and some loving from mr armed robber.
They are a minority and will be even less so a minority with continuing threats. Gamers don't like them, gamers despise them for what they are doing. Only a very small minority care for them and their 'crusade'. Time will catch up with them eventually and they will be maide to pay for their illegal actions, all these excuses will be laughed off in court.
I wasn't even really trying to make that point. That post was to highlight Sony's poor handling of the situation, not to excuse the hackers who have done this.
Don't get me wrong, whoever has done this has gone too far. I don't condone what they've done, and I agree that they deserve jail time if/when they are busted for what they've done. It's one thing to get back at Sony like Anonymous did by clogging up their servers for a little while, but this is a whole different kettle of fish. This is serious and illegal, and I can only hope that these are in fact 'misguided crusaders' rather than nefarious cyber-criminals.
Either way, I think Sony have learned their lesson now: They need to keep this data secure. There are good people out there trying to help them but they were too busy pursuing the wrong people for nonexistent crimes to take notice. I just think Sony underestimated their responsibilities here. They need to keep this stuff up-to-date and they need to ensure that it's always secure; to shrug off these explicit warnings about known vulnerabilities is simply unacceptable.
Fair call dude, a mature and insightful response. I guess I mistook your post as a defense of the hackers.
Thanks for the maturity and not flaming.
I respect your views about anon and geohot, while at the same time disagreeing. That is fair to say.
I am glad we both agree this current situation is crap and hope it ends ASAP, with the ones responsible punished and Sony learn from it and move forward.
I am unofficially annoucing that Sony is ditching PSN and all its stolen details for new customers that are willing to buy a PS4 at $1000 and make a fresh start.

sony always came of as a bit douchebaggy with their whole "our system is unhackable" ideal. maybe they thoguht because they had an epic front door they didnt need to lock up anything else?
but it has taken 4-5 years to hack? It was unhackable. The longest I've seen a console last for?
