Call of Duty Elite paid service revealed

Featured 69 Comments 32 Votes 3304 Views 31/05/2011 Back to News

The Wallstreet Journal has broken US embargo and revealed the "Call of Duty Elite" paid subscription service for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Developed at Activision's new Beachhead studio, the Call of Duty Elite monthly subscription will include all future map packs - generally around AUD $20 each - among other features. A monthly fee will be charged for the package, but pricing is yet to be determined.

The WSJ reports that it will allow players to "to analyze their performance within the game, gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies."

Further benefits of the monthly subscription are expected to be revealed at E3 next month.

However, it won't be a prerequisite and online play will remain free in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty Elite paid service revealed Comments

Wow....I wonder how many idiots will pay for this!
Too many
People need to smarten up and stop buying the over priced map packs. Makes them think they can get away with shit like this.
So much for denial.

Heller said: Wow....I wonder how many idiots will pay for this!

*raises hand*
PS3 gamers won't get this [Shifty] :P
If people pay for this it will open the flood gates for other publishers to do the same. Thank you Activision for making gaming more expensive.
Street crimes will rise because CoD junkies will try to do anything to feed their addiction.
From what I understand, and don't quote me, but the fee will give you extra content not already included in COD games.

So we get the same experience, but if we want the extra stuff, you have to pay for the premium service.

It's monetisation of a growing multiplayer market. Stuff like this keeps genres thriving and alive. Gamers will pay. I see no direct issue with it at all.
It gives you access to stats, a theatre and file sharing service much like Halo 3 and some extra maps.... as @Guyver said it will give other developers free reign to do what they want.
Lol! [Facepalm]
So from what I understand, if you pay for a month's worth of subscription, you have access to ALL extra maps and extra features for that month.

If people are smart abut this and only pay for when they plan on playing non-stop (e.g. holidays), they will probably spend less than what they have on Cod4-2 or Blops
Battlefield 3 is where it is at, people. Join the revolution, stick it to the man!

The same idiots who bought these

"to analyze their performance within the game, gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies."

So we need to pay to look at our stats?

HA! [Facepalm]

Never cared for Battlefield much, But this could be the thing that drives some gamers to jump off the CoD bandwagon, Finally.
Freakin' LOL. Any way to earn an easy buck.
Battlefield = Freedom. CoD = Pay or die
Was bound to happen soon.
I'll prob pay if the content is deemed worthy enough or of I feel I am missing out on anything by not paying.
It's life. Life's hard. Whinge about it but other publishers will follow.
I will find very contradictory of any 360 gold or ps+ subscriber to knock this though.
it is the same as paying for either of those services. Meaning it is not necessary but it adds benefits, the same as ps+ and live gild does.
That's the harsh reality.

This guy seems to have posted a fair bit of info, he's the creative director of MW3. Says there is going to be more info tomorrow.

The average COD only gamer on xbox is going to have multiple monthly subscription fee's to deal with + the temptation of paying $100+ for the hardened or $200+ for the prestige edition of the game to begin with. I wonder how much more they can suck out of them before they say enough is enough...
This is the perfect summary from Robert Bowling:

"It's a service outside the game built for the game."

So in terms of actual multiplayer, it won't be touched so I don't find any troubles about it. But I also won't be paying for it :)
Why? Just Why?
I think most of you know that I HATE COD, and if I do remember, they said that they WEREN'T going to make more money from COD players by charging subscriptions (I know this isn't to all players, but it is still a subscription service)
All they are, are charging you to view your stats and saved game clips. Online is pretty much off hands and I'm sure there would be a riot considering 360 owners already pay for Gold on top.
^

Already Black Ops > MW3.

Who wants to have to pay to see saved game clips when we already get that free? All you have to do is get a set up [MOG]

I agree mate. It is getting very very expensive and maybe this will slow down the charges etc
But realistically I cannot see it changing a thing, of someone is happy to fork out $250 for a game and set of plastic night vision goggles, a $100 subscription fee is just another thing to pay. It won't be an issue.
It's not acrivisions fault for trying to maximize potential revenue and it is not the buyers fault for buying the prestige edt or paying a subscription.
It is just supply and demand. Plain and simple.
Nothing to whinge about nothing to complain about (I'm not saying you are).
It's just another service to be offered.
I played MW1 at my cousins house for a while, andI was contemplating getting CoD 8..... but hey, there's always Battlefield, right? I was going to try Battlefield 2: BadCompany the next time I go over to his house, so then I'll make my decision. -_-

Still, not a chance in hell I'm paying to play...
Sounds like it's just for hardcore CoD players.
WTF! [Facepalm]
**** you activision.

Oh I see..... Your 17.
Life is tough kid, it's only going to get tougher.
Do you say that to every shop keeper who provides you with a service?
Funny thing is the kids like yourself, who chuck a hussy fit as above are the ones who Activision target.
Your friends will get this, then you will. Otherwise your the odd one out.
Grown up world is a tough place to survive and Activision redound damn well at it. They are thriving.
No one is really missing out in not getting Elite anyway
Hey you get to see a bit of MW3... :P

Grown up world is a tough place to survive and Activision redound damn well at it. They are thriving.

They are greedy. Investors complained after the release of the last game because Activision wasn't making them more money by charging online. That is the very definition of greedy.

Secondly, Activision are not thriving. They themselves has destroyed their other big franchise (Guitar Hero) by offering yearly titles and charging ****loads for DLC. They are doing the exact same thing with COD.

Thirdly, there is a big difference between a shop selling a product and a company making you shell out more money for a product you've already purchased. COD sells millions world-wide and I'm willing to bet they don't cost much to produce (it is a basic format a start-up company could make), they don't need to charge an arm-and-a-leg for DLC and premium passes.

Also, leave Lekkers alone, making an assumption about someone based on 10 words makes you an "arrogant mother****er"

Its DonnieK.. EAF 4 LIFE.

Elite is an extra yet optional cost. Get over it. They have a buisness to run aswell.
@Mikey,
I hit a nerve hey?
His comment was immature, pointless and just teen whinging. I called it as such.
Activision are a company, they don't care about us, they care about the $$$$$. I know that, you know that and I think most should know that.
But what they are doing here is fine, they are offering an extra service to make them extra money. If that makes them greedy then so be it. EVERY company in the world must be greedy.
As for your DLC rant. Hahahahahahahaha. So what if it cost nothing to produce? They sell it people buy it, the world rotates.
Kids like Lekkers whinge about it, get mummy to pay for it, folks like you try justify said whinging and the world rotatees.
It's life, it's tough.
Let's move one because this so called greediness of these companies is not going anywhere.
I ask do you have shares in a company?
Would you like a better return on those shares?
When you sell stuff do you sell it for no profit?
Is Activision now meant to be a charity?
also, , im 18.

There was nothing untrue about the statement. My use of foul language was used to prove my disgust at activisions behaviour.

The fact that they have the highest grossing game series of all time, and that they charge you 25 bucks for 4 extra maps is just the beginning. They just pump em out, put no care into the single player and just assume that people will buy their games.

If this was the case, they should be helping out the consumers, giving back to the community that supports them, and not pulling retarded little stunts like this.

There is absolutely no chance that im gonna buy this 'upgrade', if you can even call it that...

Thanks for the insult I shall report and you shall enjoy the 24hr ban.
As for the 'giving back to the community' they are not a charity. They are there to make money, go them, they are making LOTS of money too so I guess they are doing alright hey?
You have made the choice not to buy their game and that is the ONLY thing you can do about it. Good on you.
But guess what? They will continue to sell millions and millions until the franchise is run into the ground, like Tony hawks and guitar hero, and then they will make another money machine.
That is what game companies do, they make games, sell them for the highest possible profit margin, make DLC and sell that for the highest profit margin. That is what ANY company does.
It is life buddy and you are going to have to get used to it.
So what you're basically saying is that i'm not allowed to voice my opinion on games and game related subjects on a website made SPECIFICALLY FOR THAT...

And you had a go at me first mate calling me a whinging child, if im getting a ban, you're going down with me ;)
If you need to use name calling to get a point across, you must not be very confident with your argument.

And if someone calls you something, it doesn't mean it's open slather to reply yourself.

Keep it clean guys. We hate banning people. Act like adults.

Anyway, I have no issue with this service. No one is holding a gun to your head to buy it. The COD community appreciates the series and what it has to offer, and this service is open to them.

If you're not interested, don't buy it. You can still play online. This doesn't compromise your ability to have a good, accessible experience online.
lol i was gonna post with a he started it but im not a douche.

@Beta
First of all, never gonna change your name back huh? haha

also, This is very true, and for the sake of this argument i really hope that this service flops...

Different between caling someone a whinger and abuse.
So yeah I did report.
You abused me, I have been banned for far less, so I reported you.
And you can voice your opinion, I am not stopping you, I am just voicing my own, it may differ but that's life, I don't need to call someone a d-head to get my point accross as you so elegantly put it.

But you need to call someone a child, or a whinging teenager.

goooood one mate ;)
I seem to hit ALOT of nerves around here.
I may not say what people want to hear, that is obvious but I don't stoop to pettiness as above.
I welcome open conversation whether in agreement or disagreement, I don't welcome abuse.
I have been told by many people I have had disagreements with that while they do not agree with me, which is fine, they respect how I convey my message. That pretty much sums it up.
I am a good discussionist. I don't argue, I just put my point across clearly and when that gets under some people's nerves they go into abuse mode.
Back on topic. All of you. Now. I'm not kidding. Talk about the service and not each other.
I apologize to Lekkers for calling you a 'whinging kid' I'm sorry.
And for the record, I am against this BUT I see no issue with it. Activision are just trying to get the most out of their product.
I and I dare say everyone else here would try do the same.
I don't feel like they are ripping me off, if I did I would not buy their products.
You can ONLY be ripped off if YOU make the conscious decision to buy the product.
The consumer decides the value of a product based on their personal taste, opinion and experience. Not Activision.
lol seemed forced :P

sorry for calling you a dickhead but even irl i cant help attacking someone when they attack me unprovoked first.
Yeah... Im'a stick with Battlefield... [MOG]
To be honest, I think gamers are the most demanding, spoiled demographic on the planet.

It's the monetisation of a very social aspect of a video game experience. Every single social environment and community is doing it to some degree, or will in the future. That is what the market demands. WE demand it, because so many of us buy this game. Activision could not just let something like this -- a thriving online component -- go without further monetisation. Xbox Live fees are not their problem. They don't factor that, and they shouldn't have to. They work within their own best interests and the interests of their customers. That is, people who are willing to pay for Xbox Live/buy a PS3. The purchase is already made for them, and people have already made the obligation to Xbox Live.

I mean, how could investors possibly be against the monetisation of an inclusion that doesn't in any way compromise the main experience that the game is most prevalent at? If I were an investor, I'd be jumping for joy because I'd see a game that is essentially assured of breaking records (we all know it will), which means the added possibly of MORE sales through a private, paid service of EXTRA features.

This just doesn't concern me. I'll probably get it because it's a product I'll probably enjoy. And I know I won't be the only one. A majority of the people crying will probably buy it eventually anyway.

Activision does not have some hidden, evil agenda against us. It's making its game deeper and keeping it frequently updated. Embrace, don't disgrace.

I'm not apologising. My argument and insult were accurate.

Now we've all said our peace, lets get back on topic :)

Lekkers said: lol seemed forced

Not forced, just mature.
I swore to not purchase this game now it's even simpler, I'm not buying this game. It will be teh suck! [Rage]
hmmmm.. I personally don't like COD but I'm sure if it was a game or anything I truly loved I'd be happy to pay for extra features.. however the extras better be damn good
@Beta - gamers aren't the issue when other games offer superior online service without the subscription fee. Activision are, quite plainly, taking advantage of a demographic whom they know will reach for their (or their parents') pockets.

Activision does not have some hidden, evil agenda against us. It's making its game deeper and keeping it frequently updated. Embrace, don't disgrace.

CoD.. updated? Huh? All they do is put out samey maps at $20 twice a year. Heck, I'm STILL waiting for them to fix/reoptimise black ops so that I can play it once again..

I know they won't, too. They've already got my money. If this isn't take advantage of consumers, then I clearly don't know what is.
i will buy this game and enjoy its campaign single player mode.
i got the popcorn out to read these comments, very entertaining

It's probably a service similar to Bungie Pro, in which you had 20 spaces for video clips instead of the standard 5 and the stats are probably Blops in detail. The standard stats will probably be like MW2.
I like turtles :)
Guys, calm down. Info here. Go nao.

What, I also buy/borrow COD games to play the single player campaign, since the online community is quite bullocks.

Thats it, I've had enough of new COD games altogether now.
NOT BUYING THIS ONE................ EVERY MONTH -_-

They ****ed me over with no dedicated servers in MW3 and I'm not touching anything made by treyarch. To hell with Activision, they are the new devil publisher.
Is there an actual discussion going on here? Or is this another fanboy whinge fest?

I can see this taking off overseas, but not here in Australia as our net sucks too much for it to be worth paying for. Once/if the NBN comes online (and gains sentiences lol) it may/should be worth getting.

Battlefield will only follow the same path, won't stop me playing either though.
All ur paying for is stats done exactly the same for halo its a joke.
I don't really see the problem with this, it's an optional service on top of the core game, its not like they're pulling the multiplayer out and charging a monthly fee for it

it personally doesn't have any appeal to me so I most likely wont be buying it but if other people want to spend their money for something like this then activision would be foolish not to capitalise on it, vote with your dollars
All I hear is whinge, whinge, whinge. Seriously, it's optional. Don't pay for it if you don't want to. You can still play MW3.
