Microsoft has to make an Xbox-enable television in the future, says Gaikai boss David Perry.

The cloud-based gaming service boss says Microsoft will need to enter the television market to compete with Sony, and possibly Apple in the future, as cloud gaming platforms become inbuilt into TVs.

"Digital TVs are including all of that media stuff," Perry told CVG. "I think the mistake that the console companies are making is not a mistake of their choice - it's the evolution they have to go through."

"Once the other media hubs can have games - and I don't mean Checkers, but things like Call of Duty - the public will get confused. With that in mind, who is able to make a TV? Sony is already making them, so it will have to take all that stuff into its TVs."

"So: my prediction is that Microsoft will have to make a TV," he added. "What choice do they have? There have been lots of reports that Apple has bought out a large LCD panel-making company. It's pretty obvious that they're on the trail too."

The comments come after Gaikai signed a deal to include their gaming service in LG televisions.

I personally would prefer a console over one in built into the tv. I think microsoft could do better when it comes how we interact with our tvs. Sony is on the right track with play tv but just imagine a more integrated kinect experience with skype and streaming services.

I particularly don't want to update my tv every 2-3 years so I can keep up with the ever changing internet enabled tv streaming. As cool as it is, I don't particularly care for the in built apps/hubs that samsung and the rest of the tv manufacturers are putting in. Unless there's a standard I'm not going to pay extra for a service that might not be upgradeable or supported next year. Were already seeing that with some 3d hardware glasses.

If they go that way then they need a streaming service similar to onlive built in, not a tv with a console built in.

You don't need a Bravia to play a PS3. It needs to be playable on any tv otherwise you're drastically reducing your potential audience. It's more likely to be like a smart tv than what he's suggesting.

true, I forgot about that, a service like onlive. onlive is a subscription service of sorts right?

I wouldn't be too keen on a subscription service just for games. If foxtel or something had something like that included then I might be keen especially if it didn't eat through my quota.
