They did a little bit, but teased so much more. You can't say that was anywhere near the progression they teased for 3/4 of the episode. The "just kidding" ending was a massive step backwards.

The writers have been doing this for ages. Teasing something big is going to happen then coping out by not actually showing it, saying it didn't really happen or that we'll eventually see it later.

What else has actually happened in half a season? Nothing - especially for Ted who the story is based around.

We've always known Robin didn't want to have kids. It's why she broke up with Ted 4 seasons ago. Nothing new.

But that would have most likely confirmed that Barney ended up marrying someone else, which is the part of the story they fail to progress the most. We've know for what, 3 seasons that Ted meets his wife at Barney's wedding, and yet that part of the story has been stagnate for years.

Ummm... it was wrapped up in a neat little bow. They made it clear she didn't want to tell anyone... as if they will revisit it. I assume it will get swept under the carpet, she will be sad, maybe Ted will find out, oh boo hoo. Yes, it was horrible for her, but it really just reinforced her character's flaws (imo), they only bring out this side of her (and Ted, and Barney) for the longevity of the show. Get together, break up, be sad and lonely, start again.

Exactly. They're just stalling. I don't see why they tease us, there's plenty of storylines they have pursued which are perfectly enjoyable and satisfying, why do they have to drop in a couple like this every season, with no real outcome?

Ted trying to woo the women of his dreams, for real this time, would be ten times as entertaining as what they're doing now. Why not spend an entire season on that, instead of waiting for the show to get dropped and wrapping up 8, 9 seasons of episodes in 20 mins. Hate how sitcoms do that.

To be fair, it would be a difficult show to write because of its premise and they've had to have a backup wife every season in-case it was canceled. But now is the time to move forward. I'm not sure if it's actually contracted for season 8 yet, but Jason Segal and NPH have said they will leave after that, so I doubt it'll be continuing. For the first time they actually have a solid timeframe of when it will probably finish and they're not doing anything with it.

this whole season is about barney and robin.

its as you said, ted meets the mother there apparently, at barneys wedding. It only makes sense to tell us the events that lead up to it.

Season 8 will probably be all about Ted and the mother or w/e. the only thing that bugs me with that, is that future ted said there was more to come between him and robin. This will probably be it.

since when has somebody wanting to keep a secret ever stopped people from finding out? did you really just say that?

actually, most of the kids footage was shown in the first few years. so anything you see of the kids even now is probably 5 years old or something.

dude, it was big. regardless of whether we already knew or not, they are characters that pretty much never knew, especially with the 40yo deal which has been cut, robin moving out again, indication on how soonish it will be until he meets the mother. (he never says i love you to another woman, which i think is substantial)

it really made sense. its like he said, there was always a window of opportunity that gave him a glimmer of hope. i just think they really did have to completely and utterly close that door, and not let it just be assumed it wouldn't happen again.

and a pretty symbolic ending to the episode imo.

anyway i just wanna know who played the mother today and whether they were just a stand in so we cant look her up lol

This whole season has been building to shutting the Ted and Robin door if you think about it. The relapse with Barney, her not being able to have kids (confirming it defs couldn't be her in some weird twist), proposed to by Kevin, so it needed the episode to tie it all together.

So far every character besides Ted has changed quite a bit this seasons. Almost like let's get their stories near the end and then focus on Ted meeting the mother so it call all wrap up nicely with everyone's story finished at the end of next season.

Surely Barney's wedding is the finale this season.

On another note, I recently rewatched seasons 1-4. So much better than 5-6. Besides the Playbook. That pretty much made up for a whole season of crap :P
