Drugs are often a gateway from the horrific realities many under-privaliged individuals experience everyday. They feel that there's no other way out. Of course, Housten is a completely different case, but to say "you either take drugs or you don't" is a very impractical and ignorant sentiment.
I used the comparison with a fat person for a reason. A fat person is often lazy, and maintains unhealthy dietry habits - something that can be overcome with willpower. Drug addiction is a deeper social problem that cannot be cured by a bit of self-belief.

Okay. We can go back and forth all we like, but if you're seriously questioning where under-privileged people get the money for drugs as a genuine argument, I can safely assume that you have no experience in the matter either, let alone streetsmarts. You're from Adelaide, for christ's sake. You've never seen a beggar? Remote Aboriginal communites, where children as young as 8 get off their head on whatever they can get by any means necessary.
Those sorts of people aren't in the position to just say "no", and turning a blind eye to that won't help the deepening social issue any more.
